Supporting Brisbane children with disability through physiotherapy

Our team of Physiotherapists support children with disability and related health needs throughout Brisbane and the greater Brisbane area. Physiotherapy can support children to improve mobility, to reach physical milestones such as sitting, standing and walking, to manage and reduce pain and stiffness, to improve muscle tone and to reach many more physical therapy goals.

Outside of formal sessions with your child’s Physiotherapist, these goals can also be supported at home. Physiotherapy activities at home often don’t feel like therapy (ideally they shouldn’t) instead they are fun activities that you can do with your child, when you have the time.

Here are some ideas to try, keeping in mind that these are simply ideas and you should chat to your Physiotherapist about your child’s specific abilities, goals and support for therapy at home.

Stretching – this doesn’t mean that your child needs to a stretch in the way that adults might after exercise, your physiotherapist can give you some ideas – it might be placing a favourite toy slightly out of reach and encouraging your child to stretch to get it.

Flexibility – working on range of movement will help with flexibility, stretching and resistance bands can be used to improve range of movement.

Muscle strength – this can involve picking up or “lifting” objects to strengthen little muscles.

Play – physical play will help with all of the above, based on your child’s ability this can look like shooting hoops in a small basketball net, riding a trike, building towers with blocks and so on.

At Xavier, physiotherapy appointments can take place in the setting that best suits the needs of your child and your family, including your home. We currently have availability for physiotherapy in suburbs throughout Brisbane and the greater Brisbane region including Logan and Ipswich.
