Accessing disability short term accommodation in Brisbane

The way that Brisbane families access short term accommodation (also known as respite) for their child with a disability has changed under the NDIS. At Xavier Place, Brisbane, we understand the importance of overnight respite for children and for families. Respite provides children with the opportunity to socialise and make friends independent of their parents or full time carers and it gives parents or full time carer the chance to focus on other things for a short time.

Under the NDIS Short Term Accommodation and Assistance (STAA) replaces what used to be known as respite for individuals with a disability.

If your child doesn’t have funding in their plan for short term accommodation (the new NDIS term for respite) you may still be able to request it. If the NDIS deem your request for short term accommodation as a reasonable and necessary support you could get funding for your child to stay with us at Xavier Place.

When requesting funding for Short Term Accommodation:

  • If your child has stayed in respite care in the last 12 months, record the number of nights that respite care has been used.
  • If your child hasn’t stayed in respite care before, work out how many days/nights you would like to request in the 12 month plan period. You will then be able to work out the funds required based on the NDIS Price Guide.
  • Work out your child’s goals associated with the request for funding for short term accommodation. This is true for any supports requested in the NDIS.
