Supporting children with a disability in Wooloowin through Physiotherapy

Throughout 2020, we have been working to grow our multi-disciplinary therapy team to support more children and young people with complex disability in Brisbane and the surrounding areas. Our newest community therapy clinic is now open in Wooloowin providing occupational therapy, speech therapy and physiotherapy services.  In this article, we take a look at how physiotherapy supports children and young people with complex and multiple disabilities.

How can physiotherapy support my child?

Physiotherapy can support your child with a disability to:

  • Develop movement and work towards milestones like crawling, walking, sitting and standing
  • Maintain or develop muscle tone, strength and flexibility
  • Manage and improve pain and stiffness
  • Improve body posture and positioning
  • Develop skills for play
  • Overcome mobility challenges

Your Physiotherapist can also help with recommendations and prescription for mobility equipment.

What does physiotherapy look like?

Physiotherapy sessions will be tailored to the ability, age and goals of your child. Because of this there is no one “typical” physiotherapy session. However, a session may include strength exercises, stretching, lots of physical play like riding a trike or shooting hoops. Or a physiotherapy session may take place in a pool as hydrotherapy.
