How to find the right in home disability support for your child

At Xavier, we’ve been supporting children and young people with complex disabilities for over 70 years. One of the ways in which we support Brisbane families is through in home support. In the NDIS landscape, where the participant has choice and control, how do you know what to look for when choosing a provider for in home disability support?

Here's our quick checklist to help you find the right provider for your child and your family.

Find the right fit – providers should be willing to talk to you about your child and your family about the support that your child needs, what you like to do as a family and what you’re looking for in a support worker.

Getting out and about – even if you are primarily looking for in home support, find out whether your support workers can assist with community access, specially if you’re a family that likes to get and out about.

Common interests – does your child or teenager have any particular interests or hobbies that they’d like to share with their support worker? This could be anything from playing video games to listening to music. Finding common interests can be heaps of fun!

Communication – ask providers about the ways in which they will provide you with information as you need it and how you can provide comments and feedback to them. Providers and families should work together to support your child to meet their goals.
