Providing speech therapy for children with a disability in Ipswich

At Xavier, our team has been working to grow and improve the supports that we provide for children and young adults with a complex disability. One of the ways that we’re providing better support is by extending our allied health (or therapy) services into more suburbs across the Brisbane region.

Our new therapy clinics will bring occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech therapy to children and young adults with physical and multiple disabilities.

Our Ipswich clinic is due to open in Eastern Heights by March 2020. In this article, we take a look how speech therapy can support children with a disability in Ipswich.

Speech therapy can support your child with a disability to:

- communicate and express their needs, wants, thoughts and feelings

- use alternate methods of communication if your child is unable to speak or be understood by others

- improve your child’s ability to understand what others are saying

- express themselves through communication

- get ready for school by providing support to learn to read, problem-solve and socialise

- improve safety for swallowing and mealtime issues such as feeding and fussy eating

- improve quality of life, self-esteem and independence

- increase participation in everyday activities
