Finding the right in home disability support for children

At Xavier, we’ve been supporting children with complex disabilities and their families in the Brisbane area for over 70 years. We understand the importance of finding the right in home disability support for children and families.

Types of in home disability support for children

In home disability support can be provided by a Support Worker on a shift basis. There is also the option of in-home respite care when a carer comes to your home to care for your child for a period of time, enabling you to do other things. In-home respite might be for a few hours, for longer periods or overnight.

The type of in home disability support that will work best for you will depend on the needs of your child and your family.

What to consider

Before assigning a Support Worker to your child and your family, ask to discuss some or all of the following with your provider:

  • Your child’s support needs and whether they require high intensity support
  • Your child’s age and ability
  • Your child’s interests and hobbies
  • Your family structure
  • Your daily/weekly/weekend routines
  • Your child and your family’s lifestyle
  • Important relationships in your family
  • Your ideal home situation
