Opening Soon: Respite Centre for Brisbane Children

As we prepare to open our new short term accommodation and respite centre in the Brisbane suburb of Yeerongpilly, we take a look at what respite means to families of children with complex disability and health needs.

Sometimes the benefits of respite or short term accommodation support may seem to be focused on the primary caregiver, to give them a break. And perhaps this is how respite was viewed in the past. Nowadays, the benefits for the child as well as the parent(s) or caregiver(s) are more widely understood.

Benefits of respite for the care giver

  • Opportunity to rest and rejuvenate
  • Chance to focus on other areas of you life such as work, study or spending time with siblings
  • Can improve mental health and wellbeing and reduce stress
  • Can reduce feelings of isolation

Benefits of respite for your child

  • Opportunity to socialise with other children (or teenagers) of a similar age
  • Respite care can be a lot of fun with the opportunities to take part in activities that aren’t available in the family home
  • Can improve confidence and independence
  • Chance to experience new things and meet new people
